RPF Zip Control(TM) Copyright 1993 RPF Software ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
Abstract
--------
Zip Control is an OS/2 program which uses a PM interface to access
the freeware program UNZIP.EXE. UnZIP is a command line program which
is compatible with version 2 of the DOS PkZIP program. UnZIP is
available as freeware on many BBS's which have OS/2 libraries, on
the IBM NSC BBS, and on CompuServe (OS2USER forum, Library 4).
Zip Control is copyrighted shareware, it is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN, it is
NOT FREE. You are encouraged to use it for a reasonable evaluation
period (21 days) to see if it is software which is helpful to you
and which you wish to continue using. If you do decide to continue
using Zip Control, you MUST register your copy of Zip Control by
filling out the form in ORDER.DOC and sending it along with the
registration fee to RPF Software.
Alternatively, and perhaps easier, you may register using the
CompuServe online registration service. The registration fee will
be added to your CompuServe bill. To use this method, GO SWREG.
The registration number is 1373 or search for "RPF Zip Control."
The registration fee is currently US$18.00.
Version 1.10 Features
---------------------
- PM interface for the freeware UNZIP.EXE program.
- "Open" provides standard OS/2 file open dialog box for the user
to select which ZIP file to open and then displays the contents
of the ZIP file in a list box.
- "Settings" - This notebook of settings includes settings for
Options, Paths, and Programs.
+ "Options" saves user-specified default options:
* "Respect" the stored path(s) in the ZIP file (or not)
"Respect" (the default and recommended), when checked, will
unzip the files in the .ZIP file to the target directory,
create (if necessary) the relative paths (directories) as
subdirectories to the target directory, and properly place
the unzipped files in the correct subdirectories.
When "Respect" is NOT checked, the files in the .ZIP file
will be placed in the target directory . . . even if the
intended file paths had been stored in the .ZIP file.
* "Update" existing files and create new ones as needed
"Update" will, during the unzip process, replace existing
files of the same name in the target directory IF and ONLY IF
the files in the .ZIP file have a later creation date than
the same-named files in the target directory.
"Update" will also, during the unzip process, unzip any files
in the .ZIP file which are not in the target directory.
* "Freshen" existing files, but do not create new files
"Freshen" will perform as "Update" (above) does but WILL NOT unzip
any files in the .ZIP file which are not in the target directory.
"Freshen" is not compatible with the "Never overwrite" option,
since "never overwriting" existing files and not unzipping files
which do not exist in the target directory leaves nothing for
UNZIP.EXE to do.
* "Update" and "Freshen" are mutually exclusive selections.
* With neither "Update" nor "Freshen" selected (the default and
recommended), the files ("Selected" or "All") in the .ZIP
file will be unzipped to the target directory, REPLACING any
existing files of the same name, regardless of file creation
date, and also unzipping files which do not currently exist in
the target directory . . . subject to the "Never overwrite"
option.
* "Never overwrite" existing files
"Never overwrite" will prevent UNZIP.EXE from unzipping files
from the .ZIP file which already exist in the target directory.
+ "Paths" saves user-specified default paths
* Directory where ZIP files usually are
* Directory where ZIP files are usually unzipped into
* The option to, by default, unzip files into the same directory
in which each ZIP file is located (rather than using the
default output directory)
+ "Programs" saves user-specified default programs
* The name and optionally, path of the UNZIP program
* The name(s) and optionally, path(s) of the program(s) with
which you wish to view files stored within the ZIP file.
A default viewer can be defined. Additionally, specific
viewers can be associated with files of user defined file
extensions. For example, the viewers E.EXE, EPM.EXE,
VIEW.EXE, LIST.EXE, and GALLERIA.EXE could be associated with
<default>, .DOC, .INF, .TXT, and .BMP files respectively.
For ZIP files with embedded ZIP files, you could associate
ZIPCNTRL.EXE with the .ZIP files, so that you could "view"
the contents of embedded ZIP files . . . and so on to
multiple depths of viewing.
With due caution, you could associate CMD.EXE /C with .EXE
files to run the .EXE program.
- "UnZip" acts on highlighted files in the list box (from the ZIP
file) or ALL files. You first have an opportunity to override
the defaults listed in "Settings - Options & Paths" above and
to override the target directory. The target directory will
be created if it does not exist. A progress indicator is
provided.
- "View" passes all highlighted files in the list box to the
VIEW program(s) (E.EXE, LIST.EXE, etc.) defined in the
Programs page of the Settings notebook. This means several
files can be viewed at the same time.
If the SmartView box is checked, each file viewed will be
viewed using the defined viewer for that type of file. If the
box is not checked, the <default> viewer will be used. The
default viewer may be helpful for viewing files which have an
.INF file extension, but are actually plain text files.
- "Print" presents a listing of the files which have been
highlighted. These files can be left selected (for printing)
or not (will not be printed). Then the files will be printed
to the default PRN printer.
- "Comments" displays the embedded Zip file comments, if present.
The comments window displays automatically if the ZIP file
contains comments.
- "Product Information" shows contact information for RPF Software
and provides a method to enter user name and registration
number (received after registration via ORDER.DOC or GO SWREG).
- "Search" is used to build a list of all .ZIP files on one or
more disk drives. The list of files is sorted by name+date+
path, path+name+date, or date+name+path. This sort order can
be changed at any time, without necessitating a re-search of
the disk drives.
Individual files in the list may be selected for either
deletion (perhaps duplicates) or opening (unzipping).
All the other Zip Control capabilities are available for ZIP
files opened from the Search window.
Known Problems
--------------
* 4OS2 users may see an extra window at or shortly after startup
of Zip Control. This window will contain "ANSI escape sequences"
(will appear to be garbage text) as a result of commands in a
4OS2 .CMD file, most likely 4START.CMD. The commands in this file
that will cause this condition include CLS, VER, and PROMPT,
although any other commands which send ANSI escape sequences to
the "screen" will cause the same condition.
Until a better solution is available, 4OS2 users may wish to
move 4START.CMD to a directory which is not in the PATH, such
as 4Start. For those "icons" which will use an OS/2
Command window (OS/2 Window, OS/2 Full Screen, custom .CMD
icons), you can add "//4StartPath=C:\4Start\" to the
parameters line in the "icon" object (without the quotes).
This lets the 4OS2 window and FS sessions use the CLS, Prompt,
etc. commands for those sessions where they are needed, but
lets Zip Control run without seeing those commands.
This 4OS2 related problem will be corrected in a subsequent
release of Zip Control.

Installation Instructions
-------------------------
Unzip the delivery files to a new directory, such as \ZipCntrl.
Create a workplace shell object which references ZipCntrl.exe
(with path) as the program name and enter the same path as
the working directory.
Run Zip Control by either double clicking on the Zip Control
object on the desktop OR by dragging one or more .ZIP files
to the Zip Control desktop object (using the right mouse
button). If multiple .ZIP files are dragged to the Zip Control
object, multiple versions of Zip Control will be started, each
on top of the other. You can then use these to perform
simultaneous unzips or to investigate the various .ZIP files,
comparing dates of zipped files, and viewing zipped files.
Use the "Paths" page of the "Settings" notebook in Zip Control
to define the path where .ZIP files will usually be found,
such as C:\DOWNLOAD. Also, define a default output directory,
such as C:\SCRATCH.
Note: The default output directory is used for Zip Control
temporary files created when using "View." The temporary
files should be automatically cleaned up. However, if they
are not automatically deleted, you may delete them at any time.
The temporary files begin with "~ZIP."
You may wish to create a "shadow" of your default output
directory (e.g., C:\SCRATCH) on your desktop and have it open
when using Zip Control. As you unzip each .ZIP file, the
unzipped files will appear in the output directory on your
desktop where you can either test run the unzipped application
or otherwise evaluate the files. Then, when you no longer
want those unzipped files, you can graphically "select" all
(or some) of the unzipped files and delete them.
Advanced users may wish to create a Zip Control work area (folder)
on the desktop, containing open shadows of Zip Control, the
default .ZIP directory, and the default output directory. Rather
than closing Zip Control, close the Zip Control work area while
the application is still running. Thereafter, when you open
the Zip Control work area, Zip Control will start automatically,
and the two working directory folders will reopen where you last
left them.
Why so many .ICO files?
-----------------------
ZIPCNTRL.ICO is used as the icon for ZIPCNTRL.EXE. The files
ZIPCNTRn.ICO are used for the "animation" in the Product
Information dialog box. Any or all of the .ICO files may be
deleted to save disk space since they are not necessary to
the program.
Alternatively, you can substitute your own icons for mine as
long as you name them ZIPCNTRn.ICO, where n is a number from
1 to 9 and the numbers are consecutive. You can use 0, 1, or up
to 9 .ICO files for the animation.
